The next move is looming over my head and my pantry & freezer are overflowing! Holiday food shopping will do that! I had already planned to do a freezer challenge for January, so throwing in the pantry won’t be much additional work.
As a side benefit of beginning the clean-out now, the grocery savings can start accumulating for the next move. The first several grocery trips after a move can be quite a bit higher since so many of the basics (and more, depending on your movers!) will need to be purchased. Six months before a move, I start cutting back on how much I spend at the store in anticipation of the post-move grocery trips. My aim each trip is to spend at least $10 under my budget. At $40+ a month over six months, that $240+ is a huge help in the midst of all the money-bleeding involved with some moves!
After a semi-thorough search through the freezers & pantry, I counted 15 dinner entrees, 2 weekday lunches, 1 weekend lunch, 4 breakfasts plus several ingredients/and or side dishes. The starred items were moved down with us and MUST be used before we move again. Moving food once is my limit! My January goal is to use up at least 10 of the diners, the weekend lunch, breakfasts & 1 weekday lunch. The ingredients aren’t necessarily items I can use up in a set number of meals but I will make it my goal to use at least two each week.
I have already planned my goals for the month on Plan to Eat*. (Never used it? Check out my video on how I utilize PTE) . I will likely end up moving them around but at least they are planned & I am conscious of using them up.
