It’s that time of the year again! I’m sharing our curriculum choices over on my channel this week. Today will focus on second-grade & fourth-grade choices with eighth-grade & history/science coming on Thursday.
Levels 3D-4B in Beast Academy will be Ben’s math, in addition to Life of Fred. Ben’s heart is with LoF but I can’t relax to let it be his main curriculum. So we’ve compromised on a mixture of Beast Academy & Fred. They both work well for him and he enjoys them. [Curriculum Spotlight on Beast Academy]
First Language Lessons Book 4 or Junior Analytical Grammar will be his grammar. We wanted to love FLL 3 as much as we loved books 1 and 2 but we just don’t. It’s well-written, he is learning from it….but there’s just no love for it. So we may switch to something new. Analytical Grammar is what my oldest will use, so it would make sense to switch Ben to the junior version of it. [Curriculum Spotlight for First Langauge Lessons]
After beginning this year with A Reason for Handwriting, I switched Ben to Pentime Transition. I like A Reason for…and I’ve used it for years but I like Pentime just as well and it’s half the price! [Curriculum Spotlight for A Reason for Handwriting]
We will begin the year by finishing the Leagues & Legends series. This has been a huge hit in our school. After we finish the fourth book in the series, he will move to Maps, Charts & Graphs D (States & Regions) and we will work on learning states & capitals. Ben will continue working his way through thee MENSA for Kids Reading List. He started it last spring and has completed about half of the list (we interspersed it with history reading this year). Once he finishes the K-3 list, I’ll move him to the 4-6 list.
Fourth grade is when I move to a more formal & structured writing program. For the past two years we have done a lot of freewrites as well as Writing Strands. We will stick with Writing Strands as a supplement but our spine will be Writing & Rhetoric (book 1, possibly 2 also). Elizabeth has used this for a year now and her writing has been greatly improved by it. I hope it will be a good fit for Ben, after he gets over the learning curve. Spelling is another one I am not set on. Spelling Workout has worked well for him but I’m considering moving him to Megawords. My only hesitation is whether Megawords will need more assistance from me than Spelling Workout does (minimal to none). Finally, our main logic spine will be Building Thinking Skills Level 2.
