Megawords gets a “This is my favorite spelling” endorsement. With comments like those from her, I have no plans to change anything! She will finish book five and then go back to hit book three. If there is time, we’ll move onto book six. [Curriculum Spotlight on Megawords & Curriculum Spotlight on Writing Strands]
We will continue using Writing & Rhetoric for her main writing curriculum. She enjoys the program and it has improved her writing. We will also supplement with Writing Strands. Writing Strands approach of clear, step-by-step instructions is helpful for a child that doesn’t take to writing naturally. We will it for practice with more formal, structured pieces.
Analytical Grammar will be the only new choice for us. The other choices have been a fantastic fit for her. My reluctant writer even said, “I love writing paragraphs!” in regards to Writing & Rhetoric.
She has done fantastic with her online algebra class this year but I’m not ready to put her into geometry. So we are going to spend a second year in algebra using a program, Art of Problem Solving, that approaches algebra differently and is also more rigorous. We will supplement with some ‘Friday math‘ and then we will spend the last 6-8 weeks of the school year prepping for geometry with an online ‘bootcamp’ (same school she is using for algebra).
Spanish will be through The Potter’s School. Years ago, back in our first duty station, a retired lady at my base Bible study taught with TPS and that was one of my first experiences with homeschooling. I’ve kept the school in the back of my mind and I’m eager to use it finally.
We are going light on geography next year. She will go through Maps of the United States while she completes her history as well as working on instant recall for states and capitals.
